Diagnostic checklist with ticked items for mods folder, loader and Minecraft version, beside a magnifying glass

Because Night Vision Mod does so little, there are only a handful of ways it can go wrong. Start with the symptom that matches yours and work down.

The game crashes or refuses to start

  • Wrong Minecraft version. The current source builds a jar for 26.1.2 to 26.x. It will not load on 1.21 or 1.20.1. Check the jar's declared range.
  • Missing Fabric API. On Fabric, the mod depends on Fabric API. Add the build matching your Minecraft version.
  • Loader too old. The current Fabric build needs Fabric Loader 0.19.3 or newer; the NeoForge build needs NeoForge 26.1.2.94 or newer.
  • Wrong loader. A Fabric-only jar will not run on NeoForge, and vice versa. The combined jar from nightvision-mod is intended for both.
  • Sources jar installed. If you copied a file ending in -sources.jar, swap it for the normal jar.

The loader's error screen usually names the problem. If it does not, open logs/latest.log in your game folder and search for "nightvision".

Pressing N does nothing at all

  • No message appears: the key press is not reaching the mod. Check Options, Controls, Key Binds, Miscellaneous for the Night Vision entry and any conflict on N.
  • No Night Vision entry in Key Binds: the mod is not loaded. Confirm the jar is in the mods folder of the profile you actually launched.
  • You are in a menu or chat: close it and press the key in the world.

It says ON but nothing gets brighter

Almost always a shader pack. Shaders such as BSL bypass the lightmap the mod relies on. Turn shaders off and test again. The shaders guide explains why.

Another mod that rewrites lighting can have the same result. If you run several rendering mods, test with Night Vision alone, then add the others back one at a time.

It keeps switching itself off

On Fabric, the toggle resets to off when the client loads a new level, for example after joining another world. This is intentional in the code. Press the key again. If it switches off with no level change at all, check whether you are pressing the key by accident, and consider moving it.

You cannot get a jar in the first place

The download on this site is source code. If the Gradle build is the sticking point, the build guide lists the common errors, nearly all of which come down to the Java version or network access.
