Two questions come up about any client mod that changes what you can see: is the file safe, and will a server mind? This guide answers both for Night Vision Mod without overselling it.
What open source gives you
Night Vision Mod's code is public on GitHub under the MIT License. The Fabric version is only a few small Java files: one registers the key binding and shows the status message, and one adjusts how the game answers whether the player has the Night Vision effect. Anyone can read them. Building from source, as the download on this site requires, means the jar you run comes from exactly the code you downloaded.
Open source does not mean audited. It means you, or someone you trust, can check. For a mod this small, that check is genuinely practical.
Getting a jar from Modrinth or elsewhere
Many players prefer a ready-made jar from a mod platform such as Modrinth. This site does not track or link those listings, so we cannot say which versions are published where. If you go that route, a few checks help:
- The listed author or project should match offkiltermc and the OffKilterMC/NightVision project.
- The file's declared Minecraft range and loader should match your game.
- Avoid re-uploads on unfamiliar sites, especially ones that wrap the mod in an installer or an .exe. A Minecraft mod is a .jar file.
Using it on multiplayer servers
The mod is client-side, so a server cannot require it and does not need it. That also means a server generally has no built-in way to see that you have it. Whether it is allowed is a matter of each server's rules, not of technical detection. Many survival and competitive servers treat brightness or vision aids as an unfair advantage, while creative and building servers often do not care.
The safe approach is simple: read the server rules, and ask a staff member if they do not mention it. The author's own README recommends the mod for Creative and Spectator rather than normal play.
Protecting your worlds
Night Vision Mod does not write anything into your world, but adding any mod to a profile is a good moment to back up the saves folder. If you also update Minecraft or your loader at the same time, a backup saves a lot of grief. When you are ready, the download on the homepage is the GitHub source archive.
